Aquamarine

Aquamarine is March's birthstone and dubbed "The Sailor's Stone," was believed to protect sailors and people traveling by water. It is suggested as a gem to give on the 16th and 19th wedding anniversaries.

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and typically ranges in color from pale sky blue to a deep blue-green or teal. Aquamarine gets its name from Latin words meaning water and sea.

On the Moh's scale of hardness , it is ranked at 7.5-8.

The most valuable aquamarines come from Brazil, and also mined in Kenya and Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Russia.

Medieval alchemist believed the gem could prevent excess water retention and enhance the body's digestive and reduce the effects of poisions.

It was thought that the King of the Sea, Neptune gave Aquamarine to mermaids as gifts inspiring love among its recipients.
